Unfortunately, it seems we fail our four-legged friends again and again.

There are so many stray animals roaming the streets, and instead of offering them a helping hand, many hoomans tend to treat them cruelly.

That’s why I’m so grateful when I see these kind animal rescuers who dedicate their lives to providing these babies with the love and happiness they deserve. One of those people is Donna Lochmann.

No Puppy Left Behind

As head of rescue services Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), Lochmann has countless rescues under his belt. And yet, every time she receives information about a puppy needing her help, she jumps into the mission in a heartbeat.

So when she discovered there was a little puppy hiding in an abandoned house, she grabbed all her gear and headed to the venue.

When she arrived, she found that the house was in ruins.

But, looking through the rubble, there was a sweet little face trying to figure out what was going on.

As soon as Lochmann spotted her, she began speaking to him in a calm, gentle voice, explaining that she was only there to help him.

Even though the puppy was very careful, she still allowed the rescuer to approach her. It was as if she knew Lochmann could be trusted.

Because she didn’t want to scare the puppy more, Lochmann gave him some delicious food. This would not only fill his hungry belly, but also show the puppy that these humans were full of love and adoration.

As she ate her food, Lochmann was able to put a leash around his head.

Unfortunately, the leash scared the puppy for a while because she didn’t know what it was for. But after hearing Lochmann’s calm voice, she knew everything was okay.

When the two finally made it outside, the puppy immediately felt better.. She even allowed the rescuer to give her cute pets!

After lying down in the grassy fields for a few moments to decompress, Lochmann was able to take this sweet girl out to her car. In this one, the completely transformed puppy. She was no longer that cautious puppy – she was now wagging her tail and smiling at the hooman!

A better world

The puppy, now named Kukala, was taken to the St. Louis shelter, where he received the love and care she deserved from the start.

“You’re coming with us. You will never be alone again. Just take this leap of faith with us. It’s okay if you have to crawl. We are so proud of you. We can’t wait to show you toys, treats, puppy friends, and all the love you’ve been missing. You are so worthy, little one,” the shelter wrote.

I am so moved every time I see a puppy completely transformed after a rescue.

It’s proof that all our four-legged friends need is a little patience and adoration – and maybe a little belly starch here and there!
