When we welcome a puppy into our home, we commit to staying by their side for better or for worse.
Unfortunately, some dog owners fail to love and support their dogs when they need it most.
Peanut Butter felt rejected by her family during the most difficult time of her life.
Her owner abandoned her at Animal Care and Control in Alton, IL After surviving a terrible dog attack, Peanut Butter’s family refused to care for his injuries.
Deeply traumatized, Peanut Butter was transported to Metro East Animal Protection Society (MEHS) in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Get help
The puppy was taken to the clinic.
As the veterinary team examined him on the operating table and determined the extent of his injuries, Peanut Butter kept his head tilted.
Her eyes were filled with tears. The puppy was still in shock.
“She was traumatized and in total shock when she came in after going through all of that. She was practically catatonic on the operating table during her initial cleaning and examination…” Mady O’Reilly, a volunteer and foster parent at MEHS, said News week.
The dog avoided eye contact with the rescuers.
The doctor and medical staff were deeply sad to see Peanut Butter so sad. The kind humans tried to comfort her, but the puppy was unresponsive.
Staff cleaned the puppy’s wounds and immediately provided medical attention.
The dog’s right leg was injured. Multiple puncture wounds to her neck caused swelling and her neck became constricted.
After rescuers took Peanut Butter to her kennel, they removed her choke collar with bolt cutters.
The dog could not hide his sadness and grief.
Instead of being at home with his master, Peanut Butter was hiding in the corner of his kennel. She was overwhelmed by the noise from the shelter.
Sweet life in a host family
O’Reilly couldn’t bear to see her turn into a depressed dog, so the giant-hearted woman brought Peanut Butter home to greet her.
She and her family gave the dog time to decompress.
O’Reilly couldn’t help but cry tears of joy after seeing Peanut Butter sleeping soundly in his bed with a smile on his face.
“…She was snoring so cutely with her little gargoyle snout, and I cried tears of joy seeing her so relaxed. I literally couldn’t stop looking at her.” O’Reilly added.
O’Reilly stayed by his side. She pampered the puppy carefully and gained his trust.
Once Peanut Butter felt more relaxed, her foster mom introduced her to their other dogs. Little by little, she began to play with her furry foster siblings and enjoy their company.
Love changes everything
At first, the puppy was afraid of Jonathan, O’Reilly’s partner, but he eventually managed to win his heart.
Thanks to the selfless love and unwavering support of his host family, The dog managed to overcome his trauma.
Peanut Butter looked like a completely different dog. Her face lit up with happiness and she began rolling around in the grass, her tail wagging.
A young family with two young children met Peanut Butter and fell head over heels in love with her. They knew right away that they would adopt her and make her the happiest dog on Earth.
The peanut butter was a great hit with the couple’s son.
“She was so sweet and affectionate with their son. He dumped the whole bag of treats on the cement, and she immediately became his biggest fan,” O’Reilly said.
Peanut Butter is enjoying her new life and she couldn’t be happier. She loves her little humans and her furry siblings. The dog has finally found his happiness.
