Every dog parent knows that losing your furry baby is absolutely heartbreaking.
The bond between a dog and its human is strong and irreplaceable, and when that bond is broken, the pain felt by the human is beyond words.
A mother doggo felt exactly this pain when she had to put down her puppy. However, she later learned that this was not really the case.
Kristie and handsome
When Kristie Pereira adopted Beau, an adorable mixed puppy, from a northern Virginia shelter, she was more than ready to become a proud dog owner.
She spent each day spending time with her puppy, having fun and taking cozy naps.
However, after a few months, she noticed Beau starting to behave differently.
Pereira took Beau to the vet for a check-up and was informed that he may have neurological problems. The vet prescribed him some medication and told her she would have to take him to the emergency room if she didn’t notice any improvement.
Unfortunately, when the puppy’s condition did not improve, Pereira took him to the emergency room in Montgomery County, Maryland, and got the same information: Beau indeed had major health problems.
He was told that expensive and invasive tests were available. However, they probably wouldn’t improve the puppy’s condition at all. SO, They advised him to consider euthanasia.
After thinking about it and with a heavy heart, she decided to take him to Montgomery County Animal Services and put Beau down..
Shocking discovery
Because animal service policy does not allow owners to be present in the room during the procedure, Pereira had to say goodbye to her son and hand him over to the veterinarian.
“I don’t think anyone who just wanted to get rid of the dog would feel the way I feel about it and the way I felt about it. Like, none of this has been easy. Pereira said Fox 32.
Fox 32 obtained a form that pet owners are required to fill out when bringing their puppy in for euthanasia, and on it was a bold box indicating the owner was requesting humane euthanasia.
However, the form also states that if Montgomery County determines the animal is treatable and adoptable, they have the right to care for the puppy and offer it for adoption.
This is exactly what happened to Beau!
After a thorough examination, it was determined that the puppy was suffering from a liver problem. So they treated him, and instead of sending him back to Pereira, they sent him back to his original shelter in Northern Virginia..
Because Pereira had no idea, she was still grieving the loss of her beloved puppy. Then, one day, she came across a post on Facebook about a puppy up for adoption – and it was Beau!
Pereira didn’t know what to think.
“It’s an emotional roller coaster [been]To say the least… He was like my little baby,” » the confused owner told the news channel.
Montgomery County Animal Services told Fox 32 that they do not contact the puppy’s owners if they do not euthanize it ultimately unless the owner calls them and expresses immediate regret over the decision.
But Pereira reported that, according to her recollection of the conversation, animal services told her that if the veterinarians said there was a major health problem and it would be best for her to euthanize him, she should opt for the choice that she is most comfortable with.
The adoption organization expressed its deep understanding of how Pereira felt, but it also said it had a strict policy of not returning puppies returned to their previous ownersand that’s exactly what happened in this situation.
