As temperatures begin to drop in Houston, Texas, Samantha and her boyfriend, George, are enjoying rescuing and fostering as many homeless dogs as possible.

She’s been doing this for many years now, with the help of her boyfriend. That’s exactly how a terrier mix named Boomer was saved.

He lived in a local parking lot with three other stray dogs. Boomer was dirty and limping, which later revealed he had been shot with a pellet gun.

After seeing his condition, saving Boomer became their priority, but they didn’t leave his friends behind.

Although Samantha owns a few dogs, she always fosters about 10 to 20 dogs at a time.

Paralyzed by fear

Boomer was very scared from the beginning. It took two days to trap and rescue him because he was easily scared.

When Samantha finally brought him home, Boomer wasn’t sure about everything.

“We tried calling him to come in, but it was like there was a force field right at the door, like he had been conditioned to never come into the house.” Samantha said The Dodo.

It was just heartbreaking to watch him struggle to even get into the house.

He was unfortunately also very ill – he had heartworms and a anterior cruciate ligament tearwhich required major surgery.

It took a lot of patience and love to show Boomer that the world isn’t such a scary place. Slowly but surely, he began to open up.

“As long as you’re near him, he’s super happy.” Samantha said. Just a month later, Boomer was a completely different dog.

From street life to the sweet life

It didn’t take long for Boomer to be adopted once he was fully healthy and recovered from his surgery.

He was adopted by Dodge County Humane Society in a wonderful family in Madison, Wisconsin.

Boomer – now known as Porter – finally enjoys his sweet life and is no longer afraid of the house.

His new parents had been talking about getting a dog for a long time, so when they saw Boomer’s picture, they immediately knew they had to have him.

“He was pretty comfortable when he arrived. He was smiling and his tail was wagging. You could tell he knew he was starting a new chapter.” Porter’s father, Mike, said The Dodo.

Not only is Porter now a very happy dog, but he has also brought a lot of happiness to his new family.

“We’re really excited about all the time we’re going to spend with him,” said Mike.

On Porter’s “adoption anniversary,” his mother posted an update on her Instagram page:

“🐾 ONE YEAR 🐾 Happy “AdoptAversary” to the sweetest boy who ever lived. It’s amazing how quickly a year goes by. We can’t imagine life without you following us around (especially in the kitchen), walking us to the back door for walks, and best of all, your sweet hugs.”
