A group of recreational cyclists were on their usual trail when a single dumped cardboard box near the bridge caused them to brake.
While there was nothing unusual in a cardboard box abandoned on the side of the road, it was the strange little noises coming from inside that caught their attention.
Not knowing what it was, the cyclists got off their bikes and went to inspect the box.
Once they peeked inside, they were met with a heartbreaking scene. They simply couldn’t believe that someone could commit such an inhumane act.
Without wasting any time, they quickly picked up their phone and contacted someone for help.
A heartbreaking revelation
Inside this cardboard box were nine cruelly abandoned puppies fighting for their lives. Six of the puppies were just two weeks old and still had their eyes closed. All were terribly infested with fleas and crying from hunger.
Just thinking about these little abandoned puppies, all vulnerable and alone in a world they don’t yet understand, is quite heartbreaking.
They had to suffer, longing for the warmth and care they had been deprived of from a young age. Fortunately, the cyclists were kind enough to stop and seek help, giving them at least a chance to survive.
On the morning of March 11, the guards PAWSsion Project were alerted by the cyclist who witnessed the horrible scene.
Anguished, the rescuers immediately went to collect the abandoned puppies.
The PAWSsion project is one of the animal shelters that continues be the voice of unwanted and voiceless animals in a place where some people still think animals are something you can get rid of.
Although they work with many abandoned animals, they still don’t understand how someone can be so cruel to the point of just leaving tiny little puppies to fend for themselves.
According to Malou Perez, the founder of the PAWSsion project, at the time of the rescue, they were already overcrowded with more than 600 animals spread across their two shelters.
Even though they barely had room to house nine more dogs, they just couldn’t say “no” to these puppies.
“We are still heartbroken. But also, [we felt] gratitude that we had this chance to save them, especially since they were already within our reach”, Perez said The Dodo.
Better days are ahead
During the rescue, they first had to quarantine the puppies and manually remove ticks and fleas.
The keepers also had to bottle feed the puppies every two hours because they did not have their mother dog. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it.
Two weeks after their rescue, the newborn puppies began opening their eyes and eating a lot more. Additionally, their wounds from tick and flea bites were slowly starting to heal.
“It’s still one of the most rewarding feelings.” Perez said.
Rescuers hope to find them a new home very soon, once they are old enough and ready to go to foster care or a permanent home.
They also hope to rehome a few together, but will do everything in their power to find them. the best possible homes. It’s the least these poor puppies deserve.
In the end, the rescue organization wanted to remind everyone of the importance of sterilization to avoid unwanted litters, as well as the importance of adoption.
This is the only path to a better future, free of small, innocent animals abandoned in the middle of nowhere and forced to endure unnecessary suffering.
