Being an animal rescuer means always being prepared to face the most unexpected situations. You never know when a new mission is about to unfold.

One day, the dedicated team of Rescue for stray animals in Saint-Louisled by Donna Lochmann, rushed to the streets to help dogs in need before a heavy rainstorm, only to discover something truly shocking.

During one of their outings at a local park, the volunteers spotted a helpless creature standing behind some picnic benches. When they got a little closer, their hearts shattered into a thousand pieces…

Peek behind the benches

A tiny dog was watching them shyly from behind the benches. As they approached him, the team realized that his owners had tied him to a picnic table and I probably left him there.

No one knows exactly how long he had to endure without food or water, but The puppy was visibly in poor condition.

He looked so scared and traumatized after what turned out to be the worst experience of his life. Being abandoned by the people you love is never easy, and this sad puppy was no exception.

To make matters worse, the dog’s fur was completely covered with dog ringworm.

“It’s been raining on and off this week, with a few thunderstorms, here in St. Louis. This little puppy was tied up and left in a park, and he’s COVERED in ringworm,” The rescue wrote in a Facebook post.

At first, the puppy kept his distance and barked loudly in fear. He was so terrified that he barked at the top of his lungs to try to scare the rescuers away.

Luckily, it didn’t take long for the team to befriend him, showering him with kind words and treats. They slowly put a leash around his neck and led him to the car, where his new chapter in life began.

“He was so brave when we first approached him, but as soon as we got in the Jeep, he curled up on Donna’s lap and let out a deep sigh – that sigh spoke volumes.” SRSL added.

He instantly transformed into the adorable ladybugKnowing he was finally safe, the puppy couldn’t be more grateful.

Towards a new beginning

Apart from ringworm, the puppy was not diagnosed with any other problems. Upon arrival at SRSL headquarters, the puppy, later named WilburHe was prescribed medicated baths.

“He will be given medicated baths and will be ready for adoption in a few days. He will never have to feel alone or be so brave again,” the rescue said.

He was so relieved to be away from this park, all alone in the rain. He still needed time to fully acclimate to his new surroundings, but Wilbur was visibly happy.

When he’s ready, Wilbur will embark on a new journey in foster care, hoping to soon find the family that’s right for him.
