Two adorable puppies have caught the attention of the local community after they were discovered at the Cleveland, Texas post office nestled next to a cardboard box simply labeled “free.”

It was pretty obvious that they had been callously abandoned by someone who didn’t want them anymore and thought letting them starve to death was the best idea.

Thanks to a Texas resident who found them there by chance, these two abandoned puppies were saved just in time. This story once again raises the issue of compassion and care, highlighting the importance of every life, no matter how small or furry.

Left to their own devices

In August 2023, a person in Cleveland, Texas stopped at a few PO boxes, but instead of picking up the mail, this local resident came across something that deeply saddened her.

Next to the mailboxes was a random cardboard box, open and overturned, with handwritten words on it that simply said “free puppy.”

Not far from the mailbox, two small puppies were sleeping under the mailboxes. Helpless, hungry and depressed, each had found shelter under a different metal post.

Toni Taylor, a dog lover from Texas who is on a mission to save as many helpless animals as possible, wrote on her Facebook:

These Two German Shepherd Mix Puppies Were Abandoned In Mailboxes In Cleveland, Texas 😢 There Was A Box Marked “FREE” With Them. They Were So Hungry They Ate Paper And Rocks To Survive 😞

The person who found them had no idea how long these poor puppies had been there in the terrible Texas heat without food or water, but it was obvious they needed urgent help.

Fortunately, they quickly recovered them and brought them to safety.

Babies are safe

The two puppies were no longer fighting for their lives in those mailboxes, but unfortunately, they couldn’t stay with the Good Samaritan forever.

So, Toni and another Texas dog lover, Zully Vasquez Ventura, decided to join in the effort to rescue these two pups.

“These beautiful babies need help. There are two of them. They are between 14 and 16 weeks old. Together we can give them a chance…” Toni wrote in his message.

Their calls for help caught the attention of a Saegertown, Pennsylvania, dog rescue organization specifically for shepherds called Save the Shepherdswhich focuses primarily on rescuing Texas dogs.

“They were eating rocks and paper… Welcome to Saving Shepherds, little ones. You’re safe now ❤️🙏”, the rescue services wrote in their Facebook post.

As soon as the puppies were transferred to their new foster home, they were taken to Urgent Vet – Clear Lake, TX.

They received a much-needed medical examination, deworming, flea medication, vaccinations, etc.

For now, they will stay with their new foster family, away from everything they experienced in those mailboxes. They are safe and will hopefully find a permanent home very soon.
